Thankful Thursday - marriage time

This week my husband and I went away for two days.  A friend kept our older two boys and my sister kept the younger two kids.  We got a later start than we planned to after having to stop back at home a couple times for forgotten things.  Got to my sisters house (she lives about 15 min from us) and realized that neither of us ever put Sierra's overnight bag in the car.  Thankfully the small town my sister lives in has a dollar general and Sierra got a new outfit, new jammies, and we just grabbed some diapers and wipes too.

When we finally got on the road without any children in the backseat we breathed a sigh at the sound of quiet.  We enjoyed a leisurely drive up to our destination about two hours north of where we live.  We stopped for lunch.  Got lost a couple times.  Shopped at a goodwill we found along the way (thrift store shopping is one of the few things we have in common oddly enough lol).  Got to the cottage we were renting for the night and enjoyed the peace and quiet.

We talked.  Without interruption.  Entire conversations were had.  We talked about getting into a routine at home to cut down on the chaos.  We talked about my desires for our homeschooling.  We talked about how wonderful it was to be together without children.  We went out for a nice dinner.  We woke up and played a board game together.  Two rounds of it in fact.  We lazed around until it was time to pack back up and head home.  We stopped for lunch together before getting on the road to pick up the kids.

Today I'm thankful for our personal marriage retreat this week.  I'm also thankful for the 7yrs of marriage we will celebrate on Monday.  I'm so thankful that however it happened God put us together.  I'm thankful that we take our marriage seriously and know that it takes work and aren't afraid to put the effort in.  I'm thankful for a husband who loves me.  I'm thankful for a husband who said as we were getting ready to come home last Thursday morning "this was the BEST PTA meeting EVER!"  What a great way to look at it.

Wordless Wednesday AND Thankful Thursday

First week into the new blog routine and I already messed up!  Geesh.  Ok I snapped this pic for yesterday's wordless Wednesday post but I never got a chance to blog yesterday so here it is today:
Seriously are there words for this?

Thankful Thursday - as today is Thursday this post is actually current.

I am thankful for Colton who loves to sing and watch people drive away from our house and is so comfortable with himself that making up songs to bless others just comes naturally without a second thought.

I am thankful for a baby girl who even though she's testy lately is just so amazingly fun to watch growing into an independent toddler.

I am thankful for a super logical six year old who realizes that a water leak in the downstairs ceiling SHOULD mean a leak in the upstairs ceiling as well.

I am thankful for a 3yr old who aspires to be a six year old.

I am thankful that I get to be home with them and teach them to love each other and those around us and teach them the "boring" stuff like math.

I am thankful that my daughter sleeps until at least 8am.  At least one of my children gives me a break in the morning.

I am thankful for winter days that make me want to stay snug in my house with my children and my routines.

I hope you all have a blessed and thankful day today!

A month of giving thanks

So it's that time of year again.  The stores are crowded, traffic is crazy, the decorations are going up on main street in town.  But it's not even Thanksgiving yet!  Eh I don't mind honestly.  As soon as Christmas stuff hits the store I wander slowly and dreamy eyed down the aisles.  For me Thanksgiving is just an extension of Christmas.

This month lots of people on facebook and on mom boards I frequent are daily posting something they are thankful for.  I'm just not that dedicated and I get too easily distracted when I try to do daily things like that.  So I'm dedicating this post to being thankful for one thing for each day in November.  Are ya ready?

1 - Jesus ~ He made the ultimate sacrifice for me and my family and well there's really just nothing better than that.

2 - God ~ yeah I'm claiming Him separately.  I'm thankful for His provision both physically and spiritually.

3 - KOJ ~ He's really just a great guy.  Yeah we have our moments but all around he's amazing and I just love him so very much.  I mean he's active with the kids, does their baths, let's me get away whenever I need to, and he works hard all week to provide for our family so that I can be home with our children.

4 - Kayden ~ my oldest monkey has his moments of attitude that's for sure but all around he's a great kid.  He's super smart and he's a great big brother who takes the job very seriously.  And his logical mind just cracks me up.

5 - Colton ~ oh man this kid just he lives to be cheer.  His mere presence in a room can brighten someone's day.  I love the way that he dances through the house singing worship songs at the top of his lungs and with all of his heart.  He was an easy baby and he's still my most laid back easy going child.  He's going to strongly impact those around him in his life, I can just tell that and I'm so blessed to be his mama and get to watch first hand.

6 - Sawyer ~ this monkey is generally nothing but trouble but he's so stinking cute about it it's always hard to get angry.  He has a thirst for knowing and doing and a drive to be just like his brothers.  For all the trouble he gives me he was my easiest potty trainer.  And he just adores his baby sister.

7 - Sierra ~ I mean really who wouldn't be thankful for this precious girl?  She's just so much fun right now, watching her personality blossom and the way she has every male gendered person in this house just wrapped right around her tiny little fingers.  I'm really thankful that God saw fit to give me a daughter even though I think that it was one of the things I was most scared of in all of my life.

8 - My parents ~ they gave me a decent foundation in life and they love their grandchildren.

9 - My sisters ~ because really I can't imagine having to grow up without live-in friends.  Even my baby sister Emily who is more a playmate to her same age nieces and nephews.  So blessed to have these lifelong friends.

10 - Our church ~ we have the MOST amazing church and church family.  I've never felt so welcomed and at home at any church.  There is true friendship and a true level of accountability when asked for.  This church blesses our whole family from the smallest baby to the oldest family member (which just happens to be me lol).

11 - CMF ~ I really couldn't live without the advice, the place to vent, the camaraderie and fellowship that you all provide me in the day to day of life here with the kiddos.

12 - The freedom to homeschool my children.  Like most things involved in raising kids it has it's challenges but overall home schooling the kids is such a joy.  And hey while they're learning so am I.

13 - Our home ~ We have a lovely home and even though we rent I truly do feel peaceful and at home here.

14 - vehicles ~ I'm thankful that we have running vehicles in decent(ish) condition.  I'm especially thankful that we have two vehicles because even though I don't often choose to take all four children out alone during the week I at least have the choice if I want it.

15 - food ~ we are so blessed to live in the richest country in the world and even though sometimes it feels like the food budget is stretched thin I try to remind myself that there are children and family living on a small fraction of the food we put in our bellies every day.

16 - the internet ~ I love having this outlet, research tool, and place for fellowship in the comfort of my own home.  It's a huge resource for me!

17 - flavored coffee creamers ~ I LOVE flavored coffee creamers.  It's fun to change up your coffee from day to day.

18 - heat ~ I'm so thankful for our heat in the winter time.  I HATE being too cold.

19 - our military members - I may not always agree with what our government is doing but I will always support the people in the military because they are laying their lives on the line selflessly, missing out on time with their own families in the hope that their service will actively preserve our freedoms in this country.

20 - joy and laughter ~ I'm thankful that I can be joyful and spend time laughing - with family, friends, alone at silly things I read/see on the internet.

21 - my ladies bible study ~ I have been so blessed by the girls in my bible study group and by the book we're working through this year.  Learning some secrets to contentment and having people out there that I KNOW are praying for my requests is just priceless.

22 - the television ~ we've never had cable but netflix and dvd's have allowed me make it through the newborn stages of my last three children.

23 - birthdays ~ we've just gotten past two of our four monkeys' birthdays and I'm so thankful that we get to have a nice day together as a family celebrating the life of the birthday person.

24 - appliances ~ the washer does the washing, the dryer does the drying, the stove and toaster oven and microwave and crock pot do the cooking, and my kitchen aid mixer gets used regularly.  I can't imagine living without these conveniences in my day to day life.  I mean if I think keeping house with four little kids is hard now just imagine the days before store bought bread and washing machines.  Geesh, no thank you!

25 - shoes ~ something so simple that we consider a basic need but that many people in the world go without!  I'm so thankful that I can walk into the local store, try them on and walk out with a pair that fits.

I know that there are 30 days in November but I'm stopping with Thanksgiving week because I have something else we're going to be starting the following Monday as part of our Christmas celebration here in our home.  More on that in another post!

Thankful Thursday

Today I am thankful that God steps in even before we know that we need Him to.  There was a situation here yesterday involving a nephew and my Howler monkey that required calling 911.  Earlier in the morning my darling husband had called me to chat about something I e-mailed him about that I was upset about.  Prior to him calling our cell phone was in the diaper bag, in a pocket, in the living room.  It took easily several minutes for me to walk from the kitchen to the living room to prod the phone from the pocket of the bag and answer it.  When our call was complete I laid the phone on the kitchen counter.  Exactly where it needed to be when I was standing in the middle of my kitchen with my poor bleeding nephew needing to call 911 in a time efficient manner.  I regret the events that happened yesterday more than I can find words to say but I am so thankful that God knew ahead of time that I would need that phone and caused events to line up in a way that the phone was exactly WHERE I needed it WHEN I needed it.  Because truly, only God could have lined that up.  I rarely get phone calls and KOJ and I mostly e-mail back and forth during the days, esp that early in the morning.  So I just praise God that He's there in the little things.  He is faithful.

For the record my nephew is ok.  He got his first stitches and has to be seen for a potential sprained shoulder this morning but he is otherwise ok.  And I'm thankful for that too.

And I'm thankful for my Squirrel monkey.  He helped hold pressure to one of nephews cuts so I could use my hand to call my sister and let her know what was going on.  He didn't even bat an eye and he just steps right up.  I'm so thankful that God gave me such an amazing first born son.

What are you thankful for today?

coupons, meal planning. cutting out HFCS and food dyes.

Hello readers.  Sorry about the longish absence.  And yes I see that today is Thursday so I'll probably mention a few things I'm thankful for.  I see also that blogger here has messed up a post that was supposed to have posted last Friday for ya'll about eating from the pantry.  We have continued this week with eating as much from the pantry as possible.

Do you all want to hear about my couponing?  Meal planning?  New goals to omit high fructose corn syrup and artificial coloring/food dyes from our foods?  Ok here's a short bit:

I coupon.  As regularly as possible without making myself go insane.  I enjoy the thrill of the hunt for a good deal.  Unfortunately in the past a lot of the savings I've gotten have been on boxed and processed foods.  But I've also found coupons for deli meats, produce, meats etc.  Some stuff I will continue to buy processed for right now.  Ideally I find time to sit down and plan out a week of meals.  I write a shopping list for that meal plan.  I mark off everything I already have in the pantry to see what is left to actually buy for the meals.  When choosing meals I often choose based on what we already have in the pantry or freezer.  If we have a lot of chicken but little ground meat I will try to plan more chicken meals.  When meat we know we eat a lot goes on a super good sale I stock up.  I have been known to "borrow" space in my mom's chest freezer as we don't have our own.  In cutting out high fructose corn syrup and food dyes we're eating a LOT healthier.  I reach for a fresh fruit or veggie to hand the kids instead of an over-processed cereal bar or something.  My kids LOVE fruits and veggies so this is not a problem.  As long as I keep them on hand we're all set.  Feel free to share tips, favorite HFCS and dye free brands, and other thoughts on this matter in the comments.  I appreciate feed back from my readers.

And in the spirit of Thankful Thursday:

I'm thankful for food to eat - esp fresh, healthy food, clean water to drink, and coupons to clip.  Thankful also for the roof over our heads that protects us from the rain that falls, and the rain that falls that feeds the crops in our surrounding community so that we have fresh, healthy, locally grown food to eat.  It's all a huge circle.  And it never ceases to amaze me.

Thankful Thursday

Thursday once again brings thankful thoughts.

I'm thankful that we have an abundance of clothes to wear.

I'm thankful for this beautiful weather - the sun and the amazing temps we've had this week.

I'm thankful that I have a home to clean and dishes to wash.

I'm thankful that Squirrel is getting the opportunity to play t-ball this year.

I'm thankful that Howler says I'm his favorite mommy ever.

I'm thankful that Spider has started to say "I love you too" when I tell him I love him.

I'm thankful that Princess is such a happy and bright baby.

What are you thankful for this week?

Thankful Thursday

Today I am thankful

That all of our caterpillars survived to become butterflies in our butterfly garden.  It has delighted the children immensely.

That Princess' top teeth finally broke through and that growth spurts CAN'T last forever - I will sleep again someday!

That Squirrel monkey's adult teeth are growing in (even if one of them is way ahead of the game as it's baby tooth hasn't even come out yet!).

That my children have the opportunity to read and know the word of God and a fun place to learn about Him at our church's Wednesday night awana program.

That our Savior came to our darkened world, gave so much of himself while He was here, including His life and that He rose again.  That He sacrificed His own will for the good of the rest of us and that if we just choose to accept His gift we can spend eternity with Him in heaven.

It's the week we celebrate the passion of our Lord and I'm super excited about it this year.  Maybe it's because Squirrel and Howler are a bit older and better able to understand what it all means.  Maybe it's just where I am in my walk right now.  I think it is perfectly fitting that we celebrate the death and resurrection of our savior right at the time that spring is breaking through the winter doldrums because I imagine the resurrection to be just like that.  Before Jesus made his sacrifice for us the people were living in a centuries long winter.  Then He died and resurrected and Spring enveloped them.  The hope of life and Son.  Amazing!  Simply amazing.  God knows what He's doing.  We can see it all around us if we open our eyes and look.  So do me a favor today and take a look.

Thankful Thursday

I'll be real with you all.  As I woke this morning to a cooing Princess my blury eyes and incoherent mind wanted to just roll over and go back to sleep.  Mostly because that cooing princess was basically up all night until about 4:45am.  And 8:30 was far too early for her to expect me to be ready to rise and shine.

I have found that generally when I don't get enough sleep I'm cranky.  I'm just not a good person to be around.  I want to whine and stomp my feet and go back to bed for a nap.  I don't feel thankful for much of anything.  But today I'm turning a corner.  I'm going to BE thankful for things even if I don't FEEL it.  So today here are ten things I can BE thankful for.

1. The princess - even though she's been waking a lot at night I know this too shall pass and one day I will once again be well rested and wondering how my princess got to be such a big girl.

2. The Monkeys - even though they sometimes make me want to scream and pull out my hair they are so very entertaining and it is such a blessing getting to watch them grow, learn, and play together.

3. The KOJ - even though he gets grumpy from Princess waking us so much at night he pulls it together and goes to work to provide for us and he's an amazing dad to both the princess and the monkeys.

4. My new dishwasher - because we're running out of bowls again and I don't have to stand at the sink and wash them today in my super exhausted state.

5. Oversupply of clothes - because missing a day of laundry won't mean that my kids have to go naked tomorrow.

6. God's grace - because even though I'm cranky and impatient His grace will swoop in and sustain me.

7. Netflix - because on days like today, when brain simply won't function, I can put on educational shows for my kiddos and not feel too guilty about it.

8. our home - this home is just such a blessing to us.  Even though we rent it really feels like a home we can be in for a long time.

9. The sun - even though the temps are still colder than I'd like seeing the sun shining certainly helps lift the spirit.

10. My sister - she always has great suggestions - even if most of them won't work for one reason or another.   Still the advice and thoughts are appreciated!

And there, that wasn't even hard after all.  It's all in the attitude most days.  Today I choose to have a thankful attitude (can someone please remind me of this come 5pm when I'm trying to cook with four kids underfoot?)

What are you thankful for today?
